She was a leader in 2005 when she guided her Portland Pilots team to an unbeaten season that culminated with winning the NCAA Division I Woman's Soccer Championship. Rapinoe became one of America's most prolific scorers in her sophomore season with a ten-time scoring streak. However, her season came to an end because of a tear in her ACL. She suffered the same injury in 2007 ending her season after only two games. Rapinoe was able to recover from the injury, and was able to help the Pilots achieve a record of 20-2 in 2008.

Even though she was born in Portland she lived her first 5 or 6 year of her adulthood in the tiny town in the state of Boring in which her family had the beehive, though her mother was allergic to bees. She also was surrounded by farm animals and farms. After her parents split in the early 1990s, her family spent a brief time in Montana prior to shifting to Seattle. As her mother's shifts were constantly shifting, her bee farming business was not able to last for long. Maria and her family moved to Minnesota. In Minnesota she participated in Apple Valley High's award-winning Forensics Program and National Forensic League. At high school, Maria was very popular. In fact, she was named the King of Homecoming. Early years and career She attended the Juilliard School and realized her long-term dream of being in an Broadway production. Maria was chosen to play her first significant professional role as a young high school girl who becomes close to the ex-drug addict, prostitute ex and an ex-con.
